So: the visible indent-level stays the same, but it goes to the  
previous or next unit?  In other words, if I'm in Volume 3, and I  
click the top tear, all of Volume 2 is now what I'm viewing?

That makes sense to me.

I pretty much agree with the rest of what Graham said.
